(James Suckling’s rating: 96 points)
Vieux Chteau Certan is one of the oldest estates in Pomerol, renowned for its rich, deeply colored red wine, considered among the very best. Founded in the early 16th century by the Demay family from Scotland, the estate was purchased in 1924 by Georges Thienpont, marking the family’s entry into Bordeaux.
The Chteau boasts an exceptional terroir in Pomerol, neighboring the prestigious Chteau Ptrus. The vineyard spans 14 hectares, with vines averaging around 50 years old. These old vines, coupled with the Pomerol plateau’s microclimate and diverse soils, allow the grape varieties 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon to achieve perfect ripeness. Vinification occurs in temperature-controlled oak vats at 28C for gentle extraction, the grand vin is aged for 18 to 22 months in new French oak.

One of the stars of the vintage, the 2011 Vieux Chteau Certan was brilliant from barrel, and it is beginning to show all of that potential in bottle. Wafting from the glass with inviting aromas of mulberries, cherries, vine smoke, bitter chocolate, violets and spices, framed by a deft application of classy new oak, it’s medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with terrific concentration, powdery tannins and a long, sapid finish. Even better, this terrific wine remains notably undervalued in the market today.

The aromas of this are so gorgeous, with blackberries, black cherries and wet earth. Full body with super-fine tannins and bright acidity. A firm, tightly structured red with orange peel and other citrus fruit. This is so focused and straight.
