Here is a Sancerre that doesn’t taste like a Sancerre. I wish I had known about Cotat’s winesearlier. Not your typical racy, lean, orherbaceous style,in-fact, they are so “un-Sancerre-like” that certain vintages were forced to abandon the appellation name due to the style being so unconventional. The Grande Cote is among his best sites, on very steep vineyards, with biodynamic principles. His late harvests combined with barrel-fermenting leads to wines that are incredibly rich, rounded, and powerful. It’s also very complex and layered, with smoky roasted almond aromas. There should be more Sancerres like this, but that wouldn’t make Cotat so “Singular”.
