Winemakers Notes
A robust, fruit-forward red from the Southern Rhne. The Cicada takes its name from the emblem of the Domaine Chante Cigale the famed ‘singing cicadas’ of Provence. The Cicada (Cigale in French) is a very popular symbol of Provence. It is found everywhere, in many different forms in souvenir stores, on Provencal fabric, and the pottery versions that hang on the facades of houses to supposedly attract luck and happiness.
Grenache Noir 80% , Carignan 20% Vegetarian, Vegan
Tasting Notes
Fresh, ripe red berries with a touch of forest floor on the nose. Robust flavours of red and black cherries, a pinch of spice and some smooth tannins, definitely punching above its modest Vin de France classification.
Pairing
Great on its own or with pasta, grilled lamb and ratatouille.
Production
Alex Favier sources the grapes for his Vin de France Rouge from land the family owns in the Vaucluse; grapes for this come from 2 lieu-dits in Travaillan to the west of Gigondas La Marteillre with clay soil for the Grenache & LHers on limestone for the Carignan, vines are 30 years old. Hand harvested and de-stemmed, short maceration in concrete for the Grenache plus aging in 5 yr old Burgundy barrels for the Carignan to round out the tannins.
