• Wine Advocate: Jorge Monzn considers 2020 to be an almost prefect vintagecool and fresh, reminiscent of the great 2016. The pink 2020 Pcaro del guila Clarete was produced with 35% Tempranillo, 35% Albillo Mayor and the rest other local grape varieties (Garnacha, Bobal, Brual, Monastrell, Tempranillo Gris, other Albillos, Garnacha Blanca, Pirules, Jan, Moscatel, Malvasas…) found in the old vineyards. This is very different from your average ros, more like a serious light red or powerful white that slowly fermented during 11 months and matured in barrel for 18 months. The orange-ish/pink wine is still young and lively, with some notes of toasted sesame seeds and a faint flinty reduction a little la Coche-Dury, reminiscent of some vintages of their superb white. This was bottled without being racked, and perhaps that’s why it has this nice reduction and could be the finest vintage to date. It has a strong chalky aftertaste from the limestone-rich soils, which makes it a terroir white, but it’s also very marked by the style (which they updated from the traditional wines in Aranda in the old times) of a unique wine. It’s balanced and mellow but not a shy wine, with 14% alcohol and a pH of 3.26. I’ve tasted 15+-year-old bottles of wines of this style, and they were still lively, so this one should not be shorter lived. Unique. Given my experience with past vintages, I’d wait a little before pulling the cork here. 8,358 bottles and 151 magnums produced. It was bottled in February 2022.

Dominio del guila is a wine estate and microbrewery based in the village of La Aguilera, in the Ribera del Duero wine region of northern central Spain. The winery was established by Jorge Monzn and Isabel Rodero. The pair make a range of wines, predominantly from the local staple Tinta del Pas (Tempranillo). Following enology studies in Bordeaux and Burgundy, along with stints at Domaine de la Romane-Conti and Vega-Sicilia, Monzon spent nine years winemaking at fellow Ribera del Duero mainstay Bodega Arzuaga-Navarro. Then, in 2010, Monzon and partner Rodero established Dominio del guila in the small village of La Aguilera. The pair make a small range of wines from 30 hectares (74 acres) of old vines around the village. Although Tempranillo is the most prevalent grape in the region, Dominio del guila blanco is made from old vine Albillo while the Picaro del guila Tinto and Clarete is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Bobal and Albillo (the latter is also known as Blanca del Pas). The Dominio del guila Reserva is a similar blend of varieties (with Tempranillo predominant) albeit from the oldest vines on the property. The top wine is the single-vineyard Canta La Perdiz (aged as a Gran Reserva): a blend of Tempranillo, Cariena, Brual, Bobal and Albillo. The bodega also produces a beer called Milagritos made partly from barley grown in the region and fermented with indigenous yeast.
