Lafite has a soul, a beautiful, generous, kindly soul. Lafite turns bare earth into heaven. Lafite is harmony, a harmony between man and nature, because without our magnificent winegrowers, nothing would be accomplished.
Baron Eric de RothschildIn 1815, Guillaume Lawton said of Chteau Lafite, I consider it to be the the most elegant and delicate, with the finest substance of the three (Premier Crus). The location of its vines is one of the finest in the Mdoc. In 1855 the Chteau was ranked as a Premier Grand Cru in the famous classification that was prepared for the Universal Exhibition of that year.- See more at: http://www.lafite.com/en/chateau-lafite-rothschild/the-wines/chateau-lafite-rothschild/#sthash.eorNmxjs.dpuf

Carruades de Lafite, the second wine of Chteau Lafite Rothschild, takes its name from the historic plateau adjoining the estate. Rooted in deep clay-gravel soils between woods and marshes, this unique setting shapes its character. First produced in the 19th century, it reflects the same terroir as the Grand Vin while showing its own personality, often with a higher proportion of Merlot. Elegant yet approachable, Carruades carries the spirit of Lafite in a more accessible form, offering a promise of refinement and harmony year after year.

Tasting notes:
(Robert Parker’s rating: 91 points)
Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it prances out of the glass with joyful notions of black cherries, redcurrant jelly and cassis plus hints of kirsch, cedar chest, pencil lead and a waft of raspberry leaves. Medium-bodied, the palate possesses bags of poise and freshness, dishing out lots of bright red and black fruits with a soft, finely grained frame, finishing long with a skip in its step.
(James Suckling’s rating: 94 points)
So much rich, sweet tobacco with currants and spices, as well as graphite. Full-bodied, tight and focused with oyster-shell and lead-pencil character on the palate. Tangy, spicy and peppery.
