Sparkling Wine: 2012 | Pol Roger | Sir Winston Churchill (Double Magnum)

2012s the aromatics are powerful and forward, there is a blend of tropical notes, particularly pineapple and a rich zesty lemon sherbet going to buttery pasty.Grapefruit comes through on the palate and a creamy lemony pastry, bundles of fruit, underlying freshness on the palate and the lees and fruit have given a creamy soft texture. Zingy lemon, grapefruit and twist of raspberry hang on the finish.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: Pol Roger’s newly released 2012 Cuve Sir Winston Churchill is showing brilliantly, bursting from the glass with youthful aromas of honeyed pears, toasted brioche, pomelo, fresh pastry, green apple and mandarin orange, with hints of stone fruit emerging with time in the glass. Full-bodied, vinous and textural, with an enveloping core of fleshy, concentrated fruit, bright acids and an elegant pinpoint mousse, it concludes with a long, penetrating finish.
        • Vinous: Pol Roger’s flagship Brut Cuve Sir Winston Churchill is fabulous in 2012. Rich, open-knit and seductive, the 2012 will drink well right out of the gate, although it certainly has the pedigree to age well for decades. Lemon confit, chamomile, dried flowers, mint, spice and a kick of brioche infuse the 2012 with notable textural richness and resonance.

        Producer Information

Pol Roger is a prominent Champagne producer based in Epernay. It is known for its elegant, balanced house style made from equal proportions of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The Pol Roger champagne portfolio includes a non vintage brut, a vintage brut, a demi sec, a brut nature, a ros and a blanc de blancs. The Cuve Sir Winston Churchill Champagne was first released in 1975 to honor the great man, who had been close friends with Odette Pol Roger as well as a big fan of Champagne. The blend used in the Sir Winston Churchill cuve is a closely guarded secret but is dominated by Pinot Noir for structure and strength and finished with Chardonnay for its elegance. Pol Roger grows just over half of its grapes on its 89 hectares (220 acres) of estate vineyards. The rest is supplied by contract growers with whom the company has long-term relationships. Everything is done by hand in the winery and Pol Roger is home to the largest remuage team in Champagne. The cellar of the champagne house is one of the deepest cellars in Epernay. The winery has had considerable investment in the last ten years. The house was officially established in 1849, although at least two generations had been involved in the growing Champagne industry before Pol Roger. In the mid-1850s, export became a key focus and the house began to eschew the traditional sweetness of Champagne, producing a drier style that was more in line with British tastes.
