Bodegas Muga is a famous family-owned bodega, founded by Isaac Muga and Aurora Cao in 1932. The winery and most of the vineyards are located in Rioja, mostly around the historic town of Haro. It is home to both the most traditional winemaking methods and the latest cutting-edge techniques.Bodega Muga is one of the very few Spanish wineries that has itsown cooperage, it shows that how important of oak to give unique flavours to their wines. It produces oaked white wine, ros, Cava, but the most well-known wines are the Reservas with traditional style, the Prado Enea Gran Reserva and its smooth Torre Muga.

Vinification:
The grapes always ferment in wooden vats with indigenous yeasts and no temperature control. The wine ages for 18 months in new French-oak barrels. After ageing there is light fining of the wine using fresh egg whites.

I tasted a super young 2016 Torre Muga that had only been in bottle for some four months. But even so, the year seems to be approachable and open. Even if the wine has concentration and power, it has great balance and freshness. And it’s drinkable now, even if it’s going to get polished with some more time in bottle, where it should have a long life. And for its age, it feels quite round, and it doesn’t have edges or any harsh tannins; the oak is present but it’s neatly integrated in the wine. It has to be one of the finest vintages for Torre Muga. 36,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in early 2019. (Drink date: 2022-2034)
